The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has written to the Inspector General of the Nigeria Police (IGP) to investigate, and possibly prosecute the Adamawa state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Hudu Yunusa-Ari.
This is contained in a statement tweeted on the Commission’s official Twitter handle @inecnigeria on Tuesday.
ASHENEWS recalls that Yunusa-Ari, at the resumption of the governorship election results collation, outwitted the Returning Officer, to declare the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aisha Dahiru Binani, as winner of the election.
ASHENEWS further recalls that INEC, in reaction, suspended the collation exercise, and ordered the REC and other officials of the Commission to report to the headquarters.
The commission also met and directed the REC to stay away from the state office in Adamawa state.
Raising from its meeting on Tuesday, the commission decided to write to the IGP, urging him to investigate and possibly prosecute Yunusa-Ari.
“At its meeting today, 18th April 2023, the Commission discussed matters arising from the Adamawa Governorship election and decided to:
Write to the Inspector-General of Police for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.
Request the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the unwholesome behaviour of the REC for further action.
The collation process shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer,” the tweet reads.
