The president of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chris Isiguzo has been elected as the new President of Congress of African Journalists (CAJ).

Isiguzo replaces Alexandre Niyungeko of Burundi, who stepped down to pursue other commitments.

The Governing Council of the Congress in a meeting held online on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 unanimously voted to elect Comrade Isiguzo as it next continental leader.

The NUJ on June 23, 2020 hosted an online meeting of some African countries during which the Congress of African Journalists (CAJ) was launched to address the issues affecting journalists in the continent, promote shared values as well as uphold ‘The Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa’.

CAJ was formally registered in Kenya with its headquarters located in Nairobi.

In his acceptance speech, the new CAJ President, Comrade Isiguzo, expressed appreciation to his colleagues for the confidence and trust reposed in him.

A statement by the National Secretary of the NUJ, Mr. Shuaibu Usman Leman, stated that Comrade Isiguzo promised to work assiduously for the success of the continental body in the overall interest of working Journalists in Africa and particularly commended the Kenya Correspondents Association (KCA) for facilitating the registration of the continental body in Kenya.

The new President of CAJ, equally commended the enormous support of Gabriel Baglo and Shuaibu Usman Leman, the consultants to CAJ for their Technical Assistance and support.
