The Sokoto state commissioner of Police, CP Muhammed Usaini Gumel has told the state branch of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) that granting bail to persons by the police is free.
He stated this when the executives of the NBA led by the state chairman, Barrister Muhammad Nuhu paid him courtesy visit on Friday.
The meeting discussed crucial issues of criminal justice system, including human rights and related matters in line with extant laws and provisions of Nigeria’s constitution, a statement by the spokesperson, DSP Sanusi Abubakar.
“The duo brainstormed on challenges that hinder success of litigation and suggested way forward.”
CP Gumel, according to the statement, reassured NBA of his “commitment towards facilitating quick dispensation of justice, observance of human rights and zero tolerance to corruption,” adding specifically that “bail shall remain free.”
The CP further reiterated that policemen under his stewardship were from the date of his assumption of office, charged to be professional in their dealings as well as keep their doors open for genuine complaints from members of the public.
