The management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka, Anambra, has introduced an Emergency Care Pack (ECP) to support prompt initial treatment for patients brought in during emergencies.
The hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Dr Maureen Umeakuewulu, announced the initiative in a statement issued in Awka on Monday by the Public Relations Officer, Mrs Lovelyn Ezeakunne.
“The ECP is designed to reduce delays that may occur when patients arrive in critical condition and their families are yet to provide essential medical consumables needed for initial treatment.
“By ensuring that essential materials required for immediate care are readily available before patients’ folders are opened, we can provide prompt care upon arrival and avoid unnecessary delays caused by the time required to open folders and procure emergency supplies,” she said.
Umeakuewulu said the initiative would help healthcare workers begin appropriate care while relatives made arrangements for other requirements.
She said the intervention reflected an understanding of the urgency of emergencies and the anxiety families face when a loved one is rushed to hospital.
The pack contains essential medical consumables and medicines, including infusions such as five per cent dextrose, lancets and glucometer strips. These are provided as clinically indicated for maternal, adult and paediatric emergencies.
The CMD said the initiative demonstrated the hospital’s commitment to practical solutions that put patients’ immediate needs first.
She added that the measure would offer families some relief during stressful moments by bridging the gap between a patient’s arrival and the provision of further requirements.
“The initiative also reflects the broader vision of Gov. Charles Soludo’s administration to build a healthier Anambra through improved healthcare services and people-centred development,” she said.
Umeakuewulu added that the ECP was a practical contribution to the long-term aspirations of Anambra Vision 2070, which recognises healthy people as fundamental to sustainable development and an improved quality of life.
