NUC moves to track universities after accreditation, tightens quality control

Niigerian universities may face closer regulatory scrutiny even after securing programme accreditation, as the National Universities Commission (NUC) moves to introduce post-accreditation monitoring visits to enforce academic standards.

The proposed measure is part of efforts to ensure universities sustain the standards required for quality teaching, admissions, research and administration, rather than treat accreditation as a one-off exercise.

NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, disclosed the plan on Tuesday at the commission’s 2026 retreat with vice-chancellors in Abuja, where he announced additional measures to strengthen regulatory compliance across the university system.

Ribadu said the commission had already introduced post-matriculation monitoring and carrying-capacity visits to improve admission processes, with post-accreditation monitoring expected to reinforce its quality assurance framework.

The commission is also developing accreditation software to improve transparency, data management and regulatory oversight of academic programmes.

Beyond programme monitoring, the NUC has developed new guidelines governing the award and use of honorary doctorate degrees, including sanctions for universities that violate the rules.

The measures signal a broader effort to strengthen accountability in university administration and ensure institutions comply with established academic and operational requirements.

At the two-day retreat, themed “Enhancing Regulatory Compliance, Governance, Leadership, and Partnership in the Nigerian University System,” Ribadu also announced plans to develop a national artificial intelligence (AI) roadmap and policy framework for Nigerian universities.

He cautioned that digital transformation required more than acquiring hardware and software, stressing the importance of institutional readiness, appropriate policies, staff capacity development and cybersecurity.

The NUC has deployed its e-NUC platform to automate its internal workflow, while the proposed accreditation software is expected to strengthen technology-driven quality assurance.

Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, said universities must establish safeguards for AI adoption, particularly in academic integrity, ethics, data protection and responsible use.

She also urged vice-chancellors to strengthen transparency and accountability in financial management, procurement, recruitment, promotion, admissions and examinations.

Ahmad stressed that regulatory directives alone would not resolve the challenges facing higher education, calling for stronger collaboration between the NUC and university leadership.

On research and innovation, Ribadu urged universities to deepen partnerships with government, industry and other stakeholders to translate academic findings into practical solutions, particularly in agriculture, healthcare, education, technology and manufacturing.

He disclosed that the commission had launched the ACE Alliance platform to promote collaboration among Nigeria’s 20 African Centres of Excellence and unveiled a four-volume compendium of their research outputs.

The NUC is also developing a dedicated division to strengthen research commercialisation, with the aim of helping universities translate research findings into marketable products and solutions.

Ribadu further urged universities to explore alternative funding sources, including private-sector partnerships, alumni associations and development partners, while maintaining accountability and compliance with regulatory requirements.

The retreat is expected to produce practical recommendations and a monitoring mechanism to track implementation of agreed measures across the university system.
