Elon Musk remains the world’s richest person by a wide margin, with a real-time net worth hovering around $920–930 billion in mid‑September 2026, according to Forbes’ tracker and multiple media reports.

Jeff Bezos holds second place with an estimated fortune of roughly $360–380 billion, while Google co‑founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin occupy the next tier with wealth in the $250–280 billion range.

Tech founders sweep upper ranks

September 2026 rankings show technology entrepreneurs dominating the upper echelons of global wealth. Alongside Musk, Bezos, Page and Brin, names such as Mark Zuckerberg (Meta), Michael Dell (Dell Technologies), Jensen Huang (semiconductors), Larry Ellison (Oracle) and Steve Ballmer (Microsoft) feature prominently in the top 10, though their precise order shifts with daily market moves.

Forbes’ real-time list, which updates as stock prices change, has shown Ellison overtaking Huang at times, and Spain’s Amancio Ortega (Zara) rotating in and out of the top 10 depending on market performance.

Walmart heirs, Arnault anchor next tier

Beyond the tech cluster, the Walmart dynasty and luxury goods magnate Bernard Arnault form the core of the next group. Reports highlight Alice Walton as the richest woman on the list, with a net worth around $116–118 billion, while brothers Rob and Jim Walton and Arnault sit nearby in the rankings.

Other established billionaires such as Mexico’s Carlos Slim Helú, Microsoft co‑founder Bill Gates, and U.S. financier Steve Ballmer continue to feature in the top 20, reflecting the concentration of extreme wealth among a small group of U.S.-based entrepreneurs and investors.

Volatility and verification

Forbes emphasises that its real-time billionaire list is a moving snapshot: valuations can swing by billions in a single trading session as share prices and exchange rates fluctuate.

A widely circulated “Top 20 Richest People in the World – September 2026” list aligns closely with Forbes’ upper ranks but shows some divergence in mid‑table positions and exact figures, underscoring the need to treat any static ranking as a point‑in-time estimate rather than a fixed order.

Global context

The United States continues to account for the largest share of the world’s billionaires, with recent Forbes data indicating nearly 1,000 U.S. billionaires and 15 of the top 20 globally. China, including Hong Kong, follows with several hundred billionaires, but its representatives are less visible in the very top tier compared with U.S. tech founders.

As markets react to interest rates, AI investment cycles, and corporate earnings, the composition of the top 20 is likely to keep shifting, even if Musk’s lead at the summit appears entrenched for now.
