The outlook for the Nigerian naira is improving as stronger domestic fundamentals coincide with a broad decline in the value of the US dollar in international markets.

The development comes as Nigeria’s external reserves continue to rise, crossing the $52 billion mark and strengthening the Central Bank of Nigeria’s capacity to manage foreign exchange volatility and support stability in the naira.

According to a report by Nairametrics, increased foreign exchange supply in the official market, combined with tighter monetary management under the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM), has helped narrow arbitrage opportunities and supported the naira’s recent gains.

The currency has moved towards multi-month highs in the range of about ₦1,343 to the dollar and ₦1,346 to the dollar.

The improving domestic position is being reinforced by attractive yields in Nigeria’s fixed-income market. Higher interest rates on government securities have continued to attract foreign portfolio and institutional investors, boosting confidence in the local currency.

Dollar weakness offers further relief

The naira’s prospects are also being supported by weakness in the US dollar globally.

The US Dollar Index, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, fell nearly one per cent last week and was trading at 98.88 on Monday, close to its lowest level since mid-May.

The decline has been linked to concerns over US trade and political tensions, as well as changing expectations surrounding the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy.

A weaker dollar could provide additional relief for emerging-market currencies such as the naira by reducing pressure from imported inflation and the cost of dollar-denominated imports.

However, analysts caution that geopolitical developments could trigger renewed demand for the dollar as a safe-haven asset.

Tensions between the United States and Iran, alongside uncertainty over Washington’s threatened sanctions, remain potential sources of volatility in global currency markets.

Markets are also closely watching signals from the Federal Reserve on the future direction of US interest rates, with any unexpectedly hawkish guidance capable of strengthening the dollar and reversing some of its recent losses.

For Nigeria, sustained reserve accumulation, improved FX liquidity and disciplined monetary management could therefore remain important factors in determining whether the naira can maintain its recent gains in the coming months.
