The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has urged officers in border communities to prioritize safety while performing their duties amid ongoing security challenges.
Assistant Comptroller-General (ACG) Zone B, Mrs. Nsikon Patrick-Umoh, made the call during an operational visit to the Kebbi Area Command in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.
Patrick-Umoh said the visit aimed to assess the command’s activities, inspect border formations, evaluate operations, and provide necessary support to commands within her jurisdiction.
She noted that visiting border areas allowed her to observe operations firsthand and identify challenges such as insecurity, difficult terrain, and other life-threatening situations.
The ACG advised officers to always prioritize their safety by taking necessary precautions and strictly following standard operating procedures.
“It is crucial for officers to stay safe and alive, as their wellbeing is vital to the success of the service,” she stated.
She commended the Kebbi Customs Area Controller for his performance, describing the command’s operations as highly commendable.
Patrick-Umoh emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and professionalism, stressing that adherence to established guidelines is essential for fulfilling the service’s mandate.
“We are committed to building a reputation based on transparency. Any officer found lacking in duty will be appropriately sanctioned,” she declared.
She also urged officers to protect themselves and conduct their duties in line with standard operating procedures and international best practices.
Finally, she reaffirmed the NCS leadership’s commitment to supporting officers working in challenging and high-risk border environments across the zone.
