The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has intensified efforts to improve healthcare services in Adamawa through strategic investments in essential medical infrastructure.
Mr. Khalifa Mohammed, the NEDC State Coordinator, announced this during an inspection of ongoing NEDC-funded projects at Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH) on Wednesday in Yola.
The projects include constructing a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Centre and a modern Accident and Emergency Unit.
Mohammed said the intervention was driven by the increasing demand for advanced diagnostic facilities and quality healthcare in Adamawa and neighboring states.
He stated that the MRI Centre would enhance access to specialized diagnostic services, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances.
The project also includes residential accommodations for doctors and nurses, a waiting area for patients’ relatives, solar-powered lighting, and standby generators to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
“The project aims to create a comfortable environment for healthcare workers and patients while providing efficient service through reliable power infrastructure,” he said.
He added that the commission had also begun constructing a new Accident and Emergency Unit to ease pressure on the current facility.
“The existing emergency unit is overwhelmed due to the rising number of patients.
“Therefore, we are building a standard A&E unit with modern facilities to meet current healthcare needs and improve emergency response,” he explained.
The coordinator urged MAUTH management to properly maintain and safeguard the facilities after completion to ensure their sustainability and long-term benefits.
Earlier, project manager Mr. Zachariah Visa stated that the projects were about 85% complete, with work including roofing, truss installation, tiling, and finishing touches.
He expressed confidence that the projects would be completed and handed over on schedule.
The NEDC continues to invest in healthcare, education, and other critical sectors across the North East to support recovery, reconstruction, and development in the region.
