The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to embrace voluntary blood donation to save more lives.
Mr. Ahmad Tijjani, the agency’s director in Jigawa, made the call on Sunday in a message marking the 2026 World Blood Donor Day.
The day is observed on June 14 to recognize and appreciate the contributions of voluntary blood donors.
The theme for this year is: “Twenty Years of Celebrating Giving: Thank You Blood Donors.”
Tijjani emphasized that every unit of blood donated can save patients facing emergencies, urging Nigerians to donate regularly and voluntarily.
He explained that blood donation provides critical support during accidents, surgeries, medical emergencies, maternal health, and helps patients with sickle cell, cancer, and other conditions. It also promotes community strength through shared responsibility.
“Blood donation is a life-saving act of solidarity. Every unit helps patients in need during emergencies, surgeries, childbirth complications, and chronic illnesses.
“Nigerians should see voluntary blood donation as a gift of life that strengthens communities and saves millions worldwide,” he stated.
Tijjani added that safe, voluntary donations encourage family and friends to donate, and emphasized the importance of good nutrition and hydration before donating.
“NOA urges Nigerians to take responsibility, volunteer to donate blood, seek accurate information from trusted health sources, promote healthy living, support blood banks, and strengthen community health systems,” he said.
The director reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to raising awareness about voluntary blood donation to save lives.
