The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Lagos Branch, has urged governments at all levels to improve infrastructure and social amenities to reduce land costs and curb rising rents across the country.
The Chairman of the Lagos Branch, Mr Tosin Kadiri, made the call on Monday while briefing journalists at the commencement of the institution’s 2026 Annual Estate Week in Lagos.
Kadiri said the provision of adequate infrastructure and social amenities would reduce land value appreciation and consequently lower rents.
He also advocated the promotion and use of locally-made building materials by developers to cut construction costs and improve housing affordability.
The chairman expressed concern over Nigeria’s housing deficit, which government data estimates at more than 22 million units.
He noted that the deficit continues to rise daily, underscoring the need for accurate and regularly updated housing statistics. Kadiri called on the National Bureau of Statistics to consistently monitor and update data on housing delivery by both private and public developers.
Such data, he said, would help stakeholders assess the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to address the nation’s housing challenges.
Kadiri also urged governments to strengthen housing policies and engage qualified professionals in property acquisition and development.
He said the annual event serves as a platform to engage stakeholders on the role of estate surveyors and valuers in nation-building.
According to him, the institution has made significant contributions to the real estate sector and remains committed to ethical practice and national development.
Kadiri emphasised the importance of engaging qualified professionals when acquiring property. He advised prospective property owners to verify the authenticity of property titles and ensure that buildings have the necessary approvals from relevant authorities.
Failure to comply with approved building specifications, he warned, can result in structural defects and building collapse.
The week-long event, which ends on May 17, will feature charity visits, community outreach, sporting activities, and other programmes.
