The Kano State Government on Tuesday commenced activities to mark the 2026 Africa Vaccination Week (AVW), reaffirming its commitment to expanding immunisation coverage and integrated health services across the state.
Speaking at a news conference at the Kano Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), the Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran, said the week underscores the state’s resolve to protect children and families through vaccination and other essential health interventions.
This year’s theme is “For every generation, vaccines work”. Dr Labaran emphasised the importance of reaching “zero-dose” children — those who have not received any vaccines.
He stated that Kano will deliver a comprehensive package of services during the week, including deworming, family planning, antenatal care, nutrition screening, HIV counselling, malaria treatment, diarrhoea management, and breastfeeding support.
The commissioner announced that the official launch of AVW will feature a rally and health walk involving traditional and religious leaders as well as polio survivors to boost community mobilisation.
He added that a dedicated AVW data management tool, provided by WHO and UNICEF, will be deployed across all local government areas for real-time monitoring of vaccination coverage and service delivery.
Dr Labaran expressed appreciation to WHO, UNICEF, and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) for their continued support. He also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for providing domestic funding and strong political backing for the campaign.
He urged local government chairmen, primary healthcare teams, and data officers to ensure full mobilisation, accurate reporting, and safe service delivery.
The commissioner called on the media to intensify awareness and encourage caregivers to embrace immunisation.
“Our expected deliverables are non-negotiable: improved immunisation coverage, integrated service delivery, complete data reporting, and advocacy that inspires every parent in Kano State,” he said.
