The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) hosted a strategic meeting with the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Mahmud Kambari.

The high-level engagement was held on Monday at FAAN headquarters in Lagos to strengthen institutional synergy and accelerate aviation sector growth.

FAAN Managing Director, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, gave a detailed briefing on the authority’s operational environment and current priorities.

She noted key pressures, including rising energy costs, pension obligations, financial reconciliations, and evolving aviation security demands.

Kuku highlighted safety milestones, including the successful recertification of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

She also said thousands of staff have undergone specialised training in aviation security, safety and airport operations to improve professionalism.

Kuku outlined operational reforms, including the introduction of an “Acculturation Programme” to enhance workforce attitude and efficiency.

She explained FAAN’s operational framework and its critical role in managing Nigeria’s passenger and cargo airport infrastructure.

Kuku said: “FAAN’s workforce capacity and prevailing operational pressures require continuous personnel training and attitudinal reorientation.

“This is due to pension obligations, financial reconciliations with the Ministry of Finance, rising energy costs and evolving security demands.”

In his remarks, Kambari commended FAAN’s leadership resilience and emphasised the need for sustained strategic reforms.

He said the aviation sector’s competitiveness depends on transparency and greater private sector participation.

“We must strengthen the Public-Private Partnership framework to unlock investment and ensure procurement meets international professional standards,” Kambari said.

He also called for improved energy management systems and strategic workforce planning to enhance efficiency and fiscal discipline.

After the meeting, Kambari and the FAAN team, led by Kuku, inspected facilities at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The Permanent Secretary also reviewed ongoing projects and operational systems to assess progress and challenges at Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub.
