The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Osun on Tuesday presented 300 motorcycles to security agencies to boost operations across the state.
The motorcycles were handed over to the Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other agencies at the Police Headquarters in Osogbo.
Speaking at the event, the ALGON Chairman in the state, Mr Abiodun Idowu, said the gesture was part of the association’s commitment to the safety, security, and well-being of residents.
“The motorcycles we are distributing today will enhance mobility, improve response time, and enable security agencies to access difficult terrains, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas.
“This initiative is aimed at strengthening community policing and ensuring that no part of the state is left vulnerable,” he said.
Idowu added that ALGON had also procured additional security equipment and vehicles, which would be handed over to security agencies in the coming weeks.
Responding, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Ibrahim Gotan, who spoke on behalf of other security agencies, commended ALGON for the gesture.
“On behalf of the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, and other security agencies, I sincerely thank ALGON for this thoughtful and impactful intervention.
“Be assured that these motorcycles will be used judiciously,” he said.
Gotan, however, emphasised that security remains a collective responsibility, noting that the country’s security challenges require collaboration, partnership, and sustained support from all stakeholders.
He said the motorcycles would enhance operational capacity, particularly in hard-to-reach areas, and improve rapid response and patrol coverage.
The commissioner also commended President Bola Tinubu for enabling the initiative through financial autonomy for local governments.
