The Amalgamation of Muslim Rights Concern (AMURIC) has described the recent wave of killings in Jos, Plateau State, as grievous and unacceptable, strongly condemning the tragic incident in Angwa Rukuba, which culminated in the brutal murder of innocent Nigerians, including a corps member, Haruna, on the eve of his Passing-Out Parade.
AMURIC, in a statement signed by Ibrahim Agunbiade, noted that the circumstances surrounding the killing reflect the dangerous consequences of unchecked incitement, rising tension, and the spread of divisive and misleading narratives within affected communities. The organisation lamented that the victim was reportedly singled out and killed based on his identity, a situation it described as both alarming and deeply disturbing.
The group expressed serious concern over what it termed the increasing trend of selective reporting and one-sided narratives regarding the security situation in Plateau State. According to AMURIC, while it is true that violence has claimed lives in different communities, it is misleading and unjust to present the crisis as affecting only one religious group. It stressed that both Muslims and Christians have suffered losses over time, and any attempt to ignore this fact only fuels division and undermines genuine efforts toward peace and reconciliation.
AMURIC further decried the role of certain individuals and commentators whose public statements, it said, tend to generalise and stigmatise entire religious communities. The organisation warned that such rhetoric is not only irresponsible but also capable of inciting further violence in an already fragile environment. It maintained that Nigeria’s security challenges are complex and cannot be reduced to narrow or biased religious interpretations.
The organisation also drew attention to several unresolved incidents involving the killing of Muslim citizens, including attacks on travellers, traders, and worshippers in different parts of Plateau State and beyond. It insisted that justice must not be selective, emphasising that all perpetrators of violence, regardless of their background or affiliation, must be identified and brought to justice without delay.
AMURIC therefore urged security agencies to rise to the occasion by conducting thorough, professional, and impartial investigations into all reported incidents. It called on government authorities at all levels to ensure fairness, inclusiveness, and adequate protection for all citizens, irrespective of their religious or ethnic identities. The group also appealed to religious leaders, community stakeholders, and the media to exercise restraint, promote accurate information, and avoid statements capable of escalating tension.
The organisation emphasised that Nigerians must resist any attempt to manipulate public perception through misinformation or propaganda aimed at setting one religious group against another. It reiterated that national unity can only be sustained through justice, equity, and mutual respect among all citizens.
AMURIC expressed solidarity with all victims of violence in Plateau State and across the country, stressing that every Nigerian life is valuable and deserves protection. It warned that no society can achieve peace when injustice is tolerated or when certain groups feel marginalised or unfairly targeted.
AMURIC called for calm and urged all stakeholders to embrace dialogue, truth, and justice as the only viable path to lasting peace in Plateau State and Nigeria as a whole.
