Fresh reports suggest that Oracle has launched a massive wave of redundancies, with its Indian workforce appearing to bear the brunt of the cuts.
Employees across several regions reportedly woke up on Wednesday to find termination notices in their inboxes as early as 5 am, informing them that their roles had been eliminated with immediate effect.
While Oracle has yet to provide an official figure, the scale of the cull is estimated to be significant. Internal chatter on platforms like Blind and Reddit, alongside reports from the media, suggests that as many as 12,000 employees in India alone may have been affected— a staggering portion of its roughly 30,000-strong local workforce. Globally, the figure is being pegged at approximately 30,000 staff, representing nearly 18 per cent of the company’s total headcount.
The clinical and abrupt nature of the dismissals has left many in shock. Impacted staff reported that their access to internal systems was revoked almost instantly after receiving emails from “Oracle Leadership,” often without any prior consultation with HR or their direct managers. One long-serving employee noted on social media that they were let go at dawn despite over two decades of service, while others mentioned being cut just weeks shy of work anniversaries.
In an internal memo, the tech giant justified the move as a necessary step to “streamline operations,” rendering numerous positions redundant. To soften the blow, the company has reportedly put forward a severance package consisting of 15 days’ salary for every year of service, a month’s notice pay, and a two-month salary top-up—contingent, however, on the employee’s “voluntary” resignation.
This aggressive restructuring follows a broader trend in the tech sector, where heavyweights like Amazon have recently trimmed their headcounts to divert capital toward artificial intelligence and data centre infrastructure. For Oracle, this realignment seems to signal a pivot away from traditional computing segments in favour of AI, though the human cost of this transition is proving to be immense. With rumours already circulating of a potential second round of cuts next month, the atmosphere within the firm’s Indian offices remains one of profound uncertainty.
