Several passengers were injured on Monday after a train operating on the Kaduna–Abuja rail corridor derailed during its journey to the Federal Capital Territory.
The incident reportedly occurred near Asham station along the rail line linking Kaduna and Abuja, causing panic among passengers on board.
Officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the incident, attributing it to a technical problem involving the locomotive and one of the passenger coaches.
According to the NRC, the fault disrupted the train’s movement, leading to the derailment and injuries to some passengers.
Emergency response teams were immediately mobilised to the scene, while injured passengers were attended to and taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
The corporation said no fatalities were recorded in the incident.
Passengers on board reportedly experienced a sudden jolt when the train derailed, causing some of them to be thrown against seats and fittings inside the coaches.
Rail operations on the busy Kaduna–Abuja corridor were temporarily disrupted as officials assessed the situation and carried out safety checks.
The Kaduna–Abuja rail line is one of Nigeria’s busiest passenger routes, widely used by commuters as a safer alternative to road travel on the Abuja–Kaduna highway.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the derailment.
