Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing prolonged internal crises and the need for stability.
In a statement on Monday, the governor’s media aide, Nuhu Anka, confirmed the switch followed wide consultations with stakeholders. “After careful consideration and in the overriding interest of stability, progress, and sustainable development of Zamfara State, Governor Dauda Lawal has formally defected from the PDP to the APC,” the statement read.
Anka blamed “prolonged internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and unresolved structural challenges within the PDP at national and state levels,” which have hindered governance and dividends to citizens.
The move aligns Lawal with a platform offering “greater unity, stability, and stronger cooperation with the Federal Government” to secure the northwest state. Final deliberations occurred at Government House, Gusau, led by the deputy governor and key officials.
Anka praised PDP members’ cooperation but stressed the “political realities” necessitated the bold step for good governance. Lawal, 60, reaffirmed commitments to unity, security, development, and federal collaboration.
The defection, post a Court of Appeal ruling upholding a High Court ban on validating PDP’s Ibadan convention, boosts APC governors to 31. Channels Television reported Lawal was weighing options amid national PDP turmoil. Reasons for choosing APC remain unclear; Lawal eyes 2027 re-election.
