The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) says it will commence a new waste management regime on Nov. 17.
This was announced during a media briefing held after the FCT Executive Committee meeting, chaired by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday in Abuja.
Chief Felix Obuah, Coordinator of the Abuja Municipal Management Council (AMMC), told journalists that the initiative aims to restore order to the territory’s sanitation system.
Obuah said the Executive Committee ratified and approved a memo appointing new contractors to provide waste collection and management services across various locations in the FCT.
He added that the approval also covered the procurement of basic waste treatment plants, as well as the maintenance and operation of supervisory utility vehicles.
The AMMC coordinator, who acknowledged persistent complaints about waste disposal in the FCT, expressed optimism that the new waste management regime would ensure a cleaner Abuja.
Also speaking, Mr Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, Coordinator of the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), said the Committee approved the payment for emergency evacuation of waste from open dump sites, waterways and streams in the Dogon Gada community of the Abuja Municipal Area Council.
Zulkiflu explained that N111.9 million was released for the execution of the contract.
Earlier, the Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Mr Chidi Amadi, reaffirmed Wike’s commitment to environmental cleanliness and his drive to make Abuja a world-class city.
“The Minister is very concerned about waste management. He is very serious about it because it directly affects the cleanliness of the city,” he said.
Similarly, the FCT Transportation Secretary, Mr Chinedum Elechi, announced the approval of funds for printing services for the Directorate of Road Transport Services.
Elechi added that approval had also been given for the operation and maintenance of 34 old traffic lights, as well as the installation of three new traffic lights within the Federal Capital City.
