The Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems has concluded its 2025 Agrithon, with 36 finalists reaching the grand finale on Thursday.
The Lagos Agrithon, launched in 2023 by the Ministry in collaboration with the Lagos Agrinnovation Club, targets young agripreneurs who are not connected to government programs or feel government support has been limited.
The 2025 edition of the competition began in June with 1,000 applicants, which was later narrowed to 36 following rigorous screening, mentorship, written examinations, oral interviews, and on-site farm or business assessments.
Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, emphasized the initiative’s role in promoting food sustainability and supporting youth in agribusiness.
“We received over 1,000 business case submissions this year. The quality of pitches has exceeded our expectations, with innovations ranging from patented poultry and aquaculture equipment to other critical solutions in the food industry,” Olusanya said.
She added that the Agrithon provides a platform to connect young entrepreneurs with networks and resources to scale their businesses.
Olusanya disclosed that funding and support would be provided to finalists who meet qualification parameters. “We have N150 million in funding from government and sponsors, which we are using to support as many participants as possible. Our goal is to help these young agripreneurs grow and create a sustainable ecosystem for agribusiness in Lagos,” she said.
The Commissioner also highlighted the fairness and transparency of the selection process, noting the competition attracted participants from across Nigeria, including Ogun and Anambra states.
Under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, the Agrithon has become a key initiative promoting food security in Lagos. “We expect this program to produce enterprise shakers and industry leaders in the years to come. The state government will continue to support innovative solutions that ensure a sustainable food system,” Olusanya said.
The Agrithon 2025 grand finale marks another milestone in Lagos State’s commitment to youth-led agribusiness and food security initiatives.
