The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) on Tuesday celebrated its retiring and retired teaching and non-teaching staff for their years of meritorious service, describing them as pillars of excellence.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of LASUBEB, Dr. Hakeem Shittu, said the occasion marked the 2025 edition of the “Last Day in Office” and “Post Service Champions” programme.
Shittu, who was represented by Mr. Falana Jamiu, Permanent Board Member, Teachers’ Pension Department, said the initiative was designed to honor educators who had diligently served and advanced the state’s vision for quality and accessible education.
He described the gathering as one of reflection, gratitude, and pride, dedicated to men and women whose loyalty and dedication had strengthened the state’s education system.
“This ceremony represents more than a farewell. It is a statement of value, appreciation, and the government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and dignity of its workforce.
“Our retirees have given the best of their years and intellect to nurturing young minds. Through their efforts, Lagos has built not just classrooms but character, not just schools but communities. They are leaving behind lessons and legacies that will endure,” he said.
Shittu commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for institutionalizing policies that recognize and reward excellence in the public sector.
“Under Sanwo-Olu’s visionary leadership, Lagos continues to prioritize the welfare of educators, recognizing that they remain the true drivers of sustainable development.
“We also commend the Head of Service for institutionalizing this programme, which dignifies retirees and inspires active officers toward greater commitment,” he said.
He noted that the governor’s approval of the Post Service Champions initiative reflected his appreciation of the crucial role educators play in advancing the THEMES+ Agenda, particularly its third pillar — Education and Technology.
Shittu described the retirees as torchbearers of knowledge and discipline, saying the celebration was not merely a farewell but a show of gratitude for years of service that had transformed lives and strengthened the education system.
He also assured serving staff that the state government would continue to prioritize their welfare through prompt salary payments, a conducive working environment, and recognition of excellence through merit awards.
In her remarks, the Director of the Post Service Champion Department, Public Service Office, Mrs. Bukola Durodola, commended the teachers for their immense contributions to the development of Lagos State.
Durodola advised the retirees to embrace the realities of aging and retirement, noting that conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and arthritis are common in old age and should be managed through early preparation and healthy living.
“You need to begin to prepare early so that you can manage these situations whenever they arise,” she said.
She reminded them that retirement should not mark the end of purpose or productivity but rather a new phase of meaningful engagement.
“If you stay at home doing nothing, depression may set in. You need to find something doing — not just for money, but to stay active and fulfilled,” she added.
Durodola also noted that the Lagos State Government organizes bi-monthly programmes and webinars for retirees to discuss health, wellness, and mental well-being.
The event also featured the presentation of certificates to the retiring and retired staff in recognition of their distinguished service.
