Vice Chancellor of North West University, Sokoto (NWUS), Professor Mukhtar Umar Bunza, has announced that the newly licensed institution is set to establish international collaborations with universities in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia to enhance medical education and research.

Professor Bunza made this known on Monday during the commissioning of the North West University Teaching Hospital by Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu. The ultramodern hospital was founded by Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, marking a major milestone in healthcare and educational development in the North West region.

The Vice Chancellor commended Senator Wamakko for his unwavering vision and dedication to establishing a world-class university, adding that the Federal Executive Council’s recent approval of a full-scale operational license for the institution had paved the way for rapid academic expansion.

He described the hospital as a critical step in the university’s mission to produce competent healthcare professionals and provide quality medical services to the people of Sokoto State and beyond.

In his remarks, Governor Ahmed Aliyu reaffirmed the state government’s readiness to collaborate with the North West University in delivering quality healthcare and promoting medical education. He said the commissioning of the teaching hospital marked a new chapter in the region’s healthcare landscape.

“This facility will significantly reduce the burden on the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital and help curb medical tourism,” Governor Aliyu said. “It represents a beacon of hope for improved healthcare delivery and human capital development.”

The governor lauded Senator Wamakko for his consistent contributions to education and health, describing him as a visionary leader whose investments continue to shape the state’s progress. He also urged the hospital’s management and staff to maintain professionalism and ensure the efficient use of the modern medical equipment provided.

Governor Aliyu further disclosed that the Sokoto State Government had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) to create internship and clinical training opportunities for students of the new medical school.

In his address, Senator Wamakko, founder and proprietor of North West University, described Governor Aliyu as a silent achiever committed to transformative governance. He said the new hospital was designed to serve ordinary Nigerians and reduce the need for citizens to seek medical treatment abroad for complex procedures such as kidney transplants and other advanced surgeries.

He added that plans were underway for the admission of medical students in the next academic calendar and the establishment of a postgraduate school within the university.

The event ended with Governor Aliyu and Senator Wamakko inspecting key sections of the facility, accompanied by the Chief Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) Chairman, Dr. Lawal Bello.

The commissioning of the North West University Teaching Hospital not only marks the start of advanced medical services in Sokoto but also positions the university for global academic partnerships that will redefine healthcare training and practice in the region.
