Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Wednesday explained why he dissolved his cabinet and relieved all commissioners and public officers of their appointments.

Speaking through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara said the decision was informed by the recent Supreme Court judgment that reinstated his mandate after months of political uncertainty in the state.

The governor, who hosted a valedictory session with his cabinet members at the Government House, Port Harcourt, to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, expressed appreciation to the outgoing commissioners for their service and contributions to the state’s development over the past two years.

“Rivers State Governor, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has thanked members of his cabinet for their services and contributions to the development of the State in the last two years,” the statement read.

He urged Nigerians to use the spirit of independence to foster peace and unity, stressing the need to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in building a secure and prosperous nation.

Fubara further assured Rivers people of his renewed commitment to govern with vigour and deliver on his promises, while wishing citizens across the country a happy independence celebration.

The statement added: “Furthermore, the Governor has relieved all Commissioners and other public officers affected by the recent Supreme Court judgment of their appointments with immediate effect.”

It will be recalled that during the interim administration of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), appointed by President Tinubu after the state of emergency declaration, all commissioners, special advisers and assistants under Fubara were suspended, alongside the dissolution of state boards and agencies. Their fate remained uncertain until Ibas vacated office on September 18, paving the way for Wednesday’s announcement.
