Yobe State University’s Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) has collected 1,100 blood and biopsy samples for its ongoing Dementia Research Project.
University spokesperson Abdulmunini Gulani said on Sunday that the study is the first large-scale dementia cohort in Northern Nigeria and will support Africa’s first open-access Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC) biobank.
Led by Prof. Mahmoud Maina, the project also screens samples for diabetes, malaria, kidney diseases and other conditions.
“This milestone is not just about dementia — it’s about placing Yobe on the global map of biomedical research,” Gulani quoted Maina as saying.
He commended Governor Mai Mala Buni for approving the use of primary healthcare centres as research hubs, and lauded Yobe communities and traditional leaders for their support.
