NUJ Sokoto constitutes safety and protection of journalists, ethics committees [SEE NAMES]

The State Working Committee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, at its meeting held on 16th August 2025, approved the constitution of the Safety and Protection of Journalists Committee as well as the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.

According to a statement jointly signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Council, Usman Mohammed Binji and Muhammad Nasir Bello, respectively, the committees are constituted in line with Articles 2 and 7(c) of the NUJ Constitution.

Members of the Safety and Protection of Journalists Committee are as follows:

  1. Abdallah el-Kurebe – Correspondents Chapel – Chairman
  2. Nura Haliru – Rima Radio Sokoto – Secretary
  3. Dahiru Kwamberu – RTV Sokoto – Member
  4. Lawali Salihu Sabon Birni – NTA Sokoto – Member
  5. Aminu Suleiman – The Path Newspaper – Member
  6. Nura Bello Maikwanci – Information Chapel – Member
  7. Musa Yusuf Sanyinna – Vision FM Sokoto – Member
  8. Murjanatu Magaji – The Path Newspaper – Member
  9. Yakubu Ayuba Gidan Igwai – Rima Radio Sokoto – Member
  10. Abbas Tukur Sanyinna – Rima Radio Sokoto – Member
  11. Abbas Salihu – Vision FM Sokoto – Member

Members of the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee are as follows:

  1. Isah Abubakar Shuni – Information Chapel – Chairman
  2. Habibu Harisu – Correspondents Chapel – Secretary
  3. Ibrahim Abubakar Ladan – RTV Sokoto – Member
  4. Abubakar Isah Sokoto – Rima Radio Sokoto – Member
  5. Onuminya Innocent – Correspondents Chapel – Member

The statement added that members of both committees will be inaugurated during the forthcoming Union congress scheduled for 23rd August 2025.

During the Union congress, the Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Musa, who will serve as the Guest Speaker, will also make a special paper presentation titled: “Uniting Against Banditry: Community Roles and the Impact of Social Media on Security Management.”

“This theme was carefully chosen in recognition of the pressing need for all stakeholders to work collectively in addressing the challenges of insecurity, while also exploring how social media can be harnessed positively to support security management and community resilience,” the statement reads.

The Chairman reiterated NUJ’s commitment to promoting dialogue, capacity building, and collaboration among journalists, security agencies, and the general public for the progress and safety of society.
