President Bola Tinubu has ordered that free healthcare for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) should begin quickly. He said this program is very important to protect and respect people after they retire.
He also asked for quick action to raise pensions that have been delayed for too long. He wants a minimum pension to be introduced to help the poorest pensioners under the CPS.
The President gave these instructions after getting a report from Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom).
President Tinubu also told the PenCom boss to quickly fix the long-standing pension problem affecting police officers. He said police officers, who risk their lives to protect the country, should be able to retire with respect and without stress.
Ms. Oloworaran also told the President about efforts to protect the value of pension savings, especially with rising prices and economic challenges. She also shared plans to allow Nigerians living abroad to contribute to pensions using foreign currency.
President Tinubu fully supported these changes. He said his government is focused on helping all Nigerians, especially those who are struggling, and making sure no one is left behind.
During the meeting, the PenCom DG also shared several new plans to improve the lives of retirees and expand the reach of the pension system to include more people.
