Severe flooding has wreaked havoc in parts of Niger State, submerging farmlands in Kafin Koro, Paikoro Local Government Area, and displacing residents in at least 18 communities across Lapai Local Government Area.
The affected communities include Dere, Eshi, Apataku, Tsakanabi, Kuchi Kakanda, Arah, Achiba, Rebba, Ebwa, Pele, Edda, Rigido, Gbami, Yawa, Baka, and Muye. Many residents have been forced to flee their homes as rising waters continue to pose serious threats to lives and property.

In response, the Niger State Government has issued an urgent warning to residents living in flood-prone areas to relocate to higher ground immediately. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication, Media and Strategy, Hon. Jonathan Vatsa, stressed the importance of heeding the warning, referencing the recent disaster in Mokwa as a reminder of the dangers of delayed action.
“The state cannot afford another tragedy like Mokwa. We are appealing to our people to move out of danger zones before it is too late,” Vatsa said.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has flagged 15 of the 25 local government areas in Niger State as flood-prone during the rainy season. The Federal Government has also directed residents in four of the state’s local government areas to evacuate, warning of heavy rains and likely flooding from July 31 to August 4, 2025.

To mitigate the risk, the Niger State Government announced plans to launch a comprehensive public enlightenment campaign aimed at educating communities about the dangers of flooding and the need for proactive measures.
Vatsa also called on traditional rulers, religious figures, and community leaders to support government efforts in sensitizing the public and ensuring that vulnerable residents receive the necessary information and assistance.
