Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has started a special committee that includes many different groups. This committee will make sure that over 300 truckloads of fertiliser are shared fairly and properly with 100,000 farmers in the state.
According to Agriculture Commissioner Alhaji Murtala Dabo, the fertiliser will be given out and checked by committees from both the state and local governments. This is to make sure the process is open, honest, and involves the local people.
The committee will include members from government and private organisations, civil society groups, traditional and religious leaders, labour unions, security agencies, and anti-corruption bodies.
The Commissioner said this wide involvement shows that Kaduna State is serious about improving farming, helping rural areas grow, and making sure food systems are strong and fair.
He added that the goal of the plan is to improve food supply, help farmers in villages live better lives, and increase farming productivity in communities.
Each smallholder farmer will get two bags of fertiliser for free. Commercial farmers will benefit from a separate programme that gives them fertiliser at a reduced cost.
Alhaji Murtala said commercial farmers will buy fertiliser at 40% off. This is to help them grow their businesses, create jobs in farming, and lower the cost of farm products in the market.
The government also plans to enrol 100,000 smallholder farmers in a crop insurance programme, in addition to giving them fertiliser.
This insurance will protect farmers if their crops are damaged by pests, diseases, or bad weather caused by climate change.
Alhaji Dabo said the insurance is part of the government’s bigger plan to make agriculture in Kaduna State stronger and more secure for the future.
