À 92 ans, Biya brigue un huitième mandat alors que le Cameroun se prépare aux élections du 12 octobre

Le président camerounais Paul Biya a officiellement annoncé sa candidature à l’élection présidentielle du 12 octobre 2025, marquant ainsi sa volonté de briguer un huitième mandat à la tête du pays.

Âgé de 92 ans, Biya est le chef d’État en exercice le plus âgé au monde et l’un des dirigeants les plus anciens encore au pouvoir, ayant pris les rênes du Cameroun en 1982. Il a déclaré samedi sur ses réseaux sociaux :
« Je suis candidat à l’élection présidentielle. Soyez assurés que ma détermination à vous servir est à la hauteur des défis que nous devons relever. »

Cette annonce intervient quelques jours après qu’un décret présidentiel a fixé la date du scrutin. Les candidats ont jusqu’au 21 juillet pour déposer leurs dossiers auprès du Conseil constitutionnel.

Si ses partisans saluent sa stabilité politique, des voix critiques, tant au sein de l’opposition que dans la société civile, dénoncent un pouvoir devenu autocratique, marqué par des atteintes aux droits humains, des violences dans les régions anglophones et des restrictions à la liberté de la presse.

Plusieurs anciens alliés, notamment Issa Tchiroma Bakary et Bello Bouba Maigari, envisagent également de se présenter, laissant présager une campagne plus disputée que par le passé.

La campagne électorale s’ouvrira officiellement le 17 septembre.
