Uyo, Nigeria – The Development Communications (DevComs) Network has debunked reports suggesting that family planning service providers narrowly escaped a mob attack during a recent outreach in Mbierebe Akpawat, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
In a statement issued by Akin Jimoh of DevComs Network, the organization described the earlier reports—now retracted—as false and misleading, noting that the outreach held in June was peaceful, productive, and welcomed by the host community.
“The report, which has since been retracted, was based on inaccurate information and does not reflect the reality of the outreach activity,” the statement read. It emphasized that the event, supported by local health authorities and media professionals, was conducted in a safe and conducive environment.
Mrs. Ime Ekere, the Family Planning Coordinator for Ibesikpo Asutan LGA, also confirmed that at no time was the safety of health workers or volunteers compromised during the outreach.
While acknowledging that myths and misconceptions about family planning still exist, DevComs stated that such misinformation does not equate to hostility. On the contrary, it highlighted a growing demand for family planning services in Akwa Ibom and other states.
“The progress made so far in community acceptance of family planning is the result of trust-building efforts by government, communities, and health workers,” the statement noted. It warned that false reports of violence could undermine this progress and deter women from accessing essential reproductive health services.
DevComs reiterated that family planning is not about restricting freedoms or promoting immorality but about empowering families with knowledge and resources to make informed choices.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment—alongside federal, state, and local governments—to continue respectful engagement with communities, expand access to free and voluntary family planning services, and collaborate with traditional and religious leaders to ensure culturally sensitive health education.
DevComs urged the media and the public to verify information before circulation and support collective efforts to enhance the health and economic well-being of families across the country.
