Airtel Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability by launching a nationwide campaign to tackle plastic pollution, aligning with global calls for urgent action on this pressing issue.
In a statement issued on Friday in Lagos, the telecommunications giant announced the launch of its #UnPlasticAfrica campaign, which kicked off on June 3. The initiative mobilised employees across Airtel’s six operational regions for a week of education, advocacy, and cleanup activities leading up to World Environment Day, observed globally on June 5.
The 2025 theme for World Environment Day — #BeatPlasticPollution — underscores the critical need to address the growing menace of plastic waste, one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing the world today.
Airtel’s campaign, designed to promote sustainable living, is a part of the company’s broader effort to align its operations with environmental best practices and global sustainability goals.
Speaking on the campaign, Airtel Nigeria’s CEO, Dinesh Balsingh, said:
“As we invest in Nigeria’s digital future, we are equally committed to protecting the environment that sustains us. From AI-powered services that reduce paper usage, to partnerships that extend connectivity without disrupting ecosystems, sustainability is at the heart of our operations.”
The campaign also drew support from government stakeholders. Dr. Hassan Sanuth, Director of Sanitation Services at the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, emphasised the dire impact of plastic waste, especially in urban centres like Lagos.
“Plastic waste is choking our drains, polluting our waterways, and threatening public health,” Sanuth said. “Microplastics have even been found in food, water, and human blood. This crisis calls for stronger policies and corporate accountability — and every action counts.”
As part of the Earth Fest 2025 activities, Airtel staff volunteers, in partnership with local organisations, led community plastic collection drives and organised hygiene education sessions for market vendors and shoppers.
The campaign reflects Airtel Nigeria’s growing commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), particularly in the area of environmental stewardship. The company continues to integrate sustainability into its core practices, demonstrating how the private sector can play a pivotal role in protecting the planet.
