With the election for the next Secretary-General of UN Tourism fast approaching, leading candidate Gloria Guevara has announced a bold new initiative: the creation of a Global Council of Experts comprised of former tourism ministers. If elected, Guevara pledges to mobilize this wealth of experience to drive innovation, investment, and inclusive growth across the global tourism sector.
“Tourism ministers are champions of national development,” Guevara stated. “Their expertise has transformed destinations, created jobs, and attracted billions in investment. We cannot afford to lose this knowledge once their terms end. As Secretary-General, I will ensure it continues to shape our collective future.”
The proposed council will offer strategic policy advice, share best practices, and support tourism projects across all regions. It is envisioned as a key pillar of Guevara’s broader vision to reposition UN Tourism as a platform for meaningful collaboration, sustainable development, and investment-led growth.
This initiative builds on Guevara’s earlier pledge to host a Global Investment Summit within her first six months in office, unlocking fresh opportunities for regions including Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas.
Her campaign has centered on restoring credibility to UN Tourism and empowering governments and stakeholders who have felt sidelined in recent years. Guevara’s emphasis on public-private partnerships and inclusive leadership has resonated with many member states seeking to leverage tourism for resilience, prosperity, and peace.
“I invite all tourism ministers to join me in building your legacy and shaping the future of tourism beyond your current mandate,” Guevara added. “Together, we stand for tourism—united by experience, driven by purpose.”
The election for the new Secretary-General will take place at the end of May near Madrid.
