The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has stirred public debate by declaring that there is nothing wrong with Nigeria becoming a one-party state, as long as it reflects the will of the people.
Ganduje made the statement on Thursday while receiving members of the Forum of Former Members of the Kano State House of Assembly in Abuja. He argued that the dominance of one political party, especially the APC, would not necessarily undermine democracy if it emerges through legal and democratic means.
“There is nothing wrong with Nigeria becoming a one-party state if it is the choice of the electorate. As long as it happens through a democratic process, then it is a legitimate development,” Ganduje said.
He emphasized that democracy is not only defined by the number of political parties but also by how well the will of the people is expressed and respected. Ganduje added that the APC remains open to accommodating everyone and expanding its reach through peaceful and democratic means.
The former Kano State governor praised the party’s performance in recent elections and expressed confidence that APC would continue to gain ground across the country due to what he described as its commitment to development and national unity.
Ganduje’s remarks have triggered mixed reactions, with some political analysts warning against the dangers of suppressing opposition voices, which are essential for checks and balances in a democratic system.
Despite the controversy, Ganduje insists that APC’s rise is a result of widespread public support and not by force or manipulation.
