Former Minister of Communications, Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (Rtd), has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his close friend and colleague, Major General Godwin Osagie Abbe (Rtd), a former Military Governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States.

This is contained in a statement by the Media Office of Maj-Gen. Tajudeen Olanrewaju (Rtd), a former Minister of Communications, Member Provisional Ruling Council (PRC), and GOC 3 Division Nigerian Army.

General Abbe, who also served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division Nigerian Army, Minister of the Interior, and Minister of Defence, died on Saturday, December 21, 2024, in Abuja at the age of 74.

In his heartfelt reaction, General Olanrewaju, a former Commander Corps of Artillery, GOC 3 Division Nigerian Army, and Acting Military Governor of Old Ondo State, described the news as “very sad,” stating: “Our dear friend and colleague, Gen. Godwin Abbe, passed on to eternity Saturday night in Abuja. May God grant him eternal rest. Amen!”

Reflecting on their shared history, Olanrewaju recounted Abbe’s exceptional contributions to the nation:
“Maj. Gen. Godwin Osagie Abbe was a brilliant infantry officer who fought valiantly during the Biafran Civil War. While I was in the 2nd Field Battery, Artillery in Onitsha, he excelled in the infantry, showcasing unparalleled skills and dedication to our nation’s unity. His military career was marked by excellence and a steadfast commitment to the Nigerian Armed Forces.”

Olanrewaju also acknowledged Abbe’s statesmanship, highlighting his service on the Provisional Ruling Council (PRC), the nation’s highest policy-making body during the military era: “It was within this esteemed council that General Abbe and others advocated for clemency on my behalf during a critical moment in my life. His role in saving my life during the aftermath of the 1997 coup saga remains an unforgettable testament to his loyalty and friendship.”

He further praised Abbe’s talent, leadership, and dedication to nation-building, describing him as a consummate military general, a community leader, and a gentleman: “Abbe’s life was a testament to honour and service. His passing is a great loss to the nation and to all who knew him. May his soul find solace in the bosom of the Lord.”

General Olanrewaju extended his condolences to the Abbe family, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time.
