Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has reinstated routine immunization services, marking a significant milestone in improving maternal and child health across the state.
The services, neglected for 18 months under the previous administration of Umar Ganduje, were restored as part of Governor Yusuf’s priority to safeguard the lives of newborns.
His administration’s commitment was demonstrated during the launch of the second phase of the 2024 Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNCH) Week.
Speaking at the event, Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of health in his administration’s agenda, stating: “Health is our second priority after education. Within this sector, we are focusing on maternal and child health to prevent the avoidable loss of lives among pregnant women and their children.”
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakin Tofa, the Governor revealed that the state budget for 2024 includes robust funding for immunization services, ensuring these essential programs remain accessible and sustainable.
Governor Yusuf’s intervention underscores his administration’s determination to reduce maternal and child mortality rates in Kano.
His swift action since taking office in 2023 has prioritized the resumption of immunization exercises, addressing the prolonged neglect under the previous administration.
By guaranteeing timely funding at both the state and federal levels, Governor Yusuf aims to establish a strong healthcare foundation to protect the state’s most vulnerable residents.
Sanusi Dawakin Tofa, the Director General of Media and Publicity, reiterated the administration’s focus on addressing pressing healthcare challenges.
“This reflects our unwavering commitment to improving the lives of Kano’s citizens, particularly women and children,” he said.
