Google has unveiled advanced theft protection features for Android devices, designed to combat phone theft and safeguard sensitive user data.
The announcement, made Tuesday in Lagos, was shared in a statement by Mrs. Oluwaseun Odufuwa, Account Manager at Irvine Partners.
The new features, available on most Android 10+ devices, leverage AI-powered theft detection, offline device locking, and enhanced security protocols to protect users.
Google stated that phone theft remains a significant concern in Africa and globally, highlighting the need for robust solutions.
The AI-powered theft detection feature uses on-device machine learning to identify theft attempts and automatically locks the screen to prevent unauthorized access. The offline device lock ensures data remains protected even when a device is offline, blocking thieves from accessing sensitive information. Enhanced security features make it harder for thieves to tamper with settings or reset devices without proper authentication.
Smartphone adoption is rising across Sub-Saharan Africa, with rates reaching 61% in Kenya, 31% in Uganda, and 24-25% in Rwanda and Burundi. This growth has also led to an increase in phone theft, driven by the devices’ high resale value and stored sensitive data. According to the 2023 GSMA Consumer Survey, 19% of mobile phone users in South Africa experienced theft or loss of their devices within the past year.
The updates include advanced theft detection mechanisms such as remote locking, which allows users to secure their devices using Android’s “Find My Device” service. Factory reset protection makes it nearly impossible for thieves to reset devices without Google account credentials, reducing their resale value. An upcoming opt-in feature, “Identity Check,” will require biometric verification for critical account settings and device changes, adding another layer of security.
“These features are rolling out gradually and will cover 90% of active Android users globally,” Odufuwa explained. Users can activate the theft protection features by navigating to their device’s settings, selecting “Security,” and enabling “Theft Protection.” Google recommends periodically checking settings to ensure compatibility with the device.
Google emphasized its dedication to improving Android security, stating that the features are designed to protect users and their data before, during, and after a theft incident. It also assured users of continued collaboration with global partners to ensure Android users remain safe.
