ASHENEWS reports that the Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago has set a new minimum wage of N80,000 for civil servants in the state, with implementation set to begin in November 2024.
The announcement was made following a meeting with organized labor representatives at the Government House in Minna on Friday.
Governor Bago noted that this adjustment came after extensive discussions with labor officials, adding, “After an extensive meeting with our team and the organized labor, we have decided to adopt N80,000 as the minimum wage.”
Governor Bago assured that the new wage level is sustainable, particularly with recent growth in the state’s agricultural sector.
“N80,000 is sustainable, and with our strides in agriculture, we will increase it further soon,” he stated.
Niger State NLC Chairman Abdulkareem Lafene welcomed the increase but highlighted economic challenges workers still face.
“While N80,000 is a step forward, it’s not enough given the current cost of living. A bag of rice alone costs more than N80,000, so there is still a need for improvement,” he remarked.
