The Niger State government has signed a monumental agreement with Direkci Group, a Turkish import-export giant, to cultivate and export soybeans in a deal valued at $200 million annually.
The 10-year partnership, signed under the banner of Niger Foods, is set to transform the agricultural landscape of the state, creating significant economic opportunities for local farmers.
The agreement was formalized at the Government House in Minna, with top officials, including Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago and Direkci Group’s MD/CEO, Nurullah Mehmet, in attendance.
Speaking on the deal, Niger Foods Chairman, Sammy Adigun revealed that the agreement would empower local farmers by providing them with seeds and fertilizers, ensuring a guaranteed market for their produce.
“The soybeans they intend to purchase from us are valued at $200 million annually, a sum that will drive economic empowerment and agricultural growth across the state,” Adigun explained.
The Turkish firm is also bringing in a $50 million investment to support the local farming sector, further enhancing productivity and creating new opportunities for growth.
Adigun added that the partnership extends beyond soybeans, as both parties plan to develop additional infrastructure, including a 100-hectare greenhouse project at the airport city and a 500,000-capacity poultry farm.
Additionally, a 30,000-hectare land in Adunu will be dedicated to expanding agricultural activities in the state.
Governor Bago expressed his optimism, stating that the state has the potential to employ up to one million youths in the agro-sector.
“This collaboration is a game-changer for Niger State, and we are confident it will significantly reduce unemployment while boosting food security,” Bago said.
The MD of Direkci Group, Nurullah Mehmet, hailed the agreement as a pivotal step in advancing Nigeria’s agricultural revolution.
He emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting job creation and economic development in Niger State through this strategic partnership.
With the signing of this MoU, Niger State is set to become a major player in the global soybean market, driving economic growth and agricultural innovation over the next decade.
