The Director-General of Nigerian Communication Satellite Limited (NigComSat), Jane Egerton-Idehen, says the agency has become commercially viable.
Egerton-Idehen said this at the March edition of the monthly DevsInGovernment organised by the Federal Ministry of Communications Innovation and Digital Economy on Monday in Abuja.
The event was to commemorate International Women’s Day in honour of women in tech within Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government.
This event was tagged: “Women in Tech and Leadership”.
According to the D-G, every limited liability company should generate revenue for the government and not rely solely on the government for funds.
“You were given an asset expecting that you create value, monetise it so that you can run the operation and create value for your investor. It was important for us to go back to the drawing board.
“It was also important for us to be commercially viable.
“If a limited liability company is not commercially viable, it cannot do business and there is no continuity,” she said.
The Post Master General of the Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST), Tola Adeyemi, said that the government gave women lots of opportunities.
Adeyemi urged both the public and private sectors to create a work balance for females because of their childbearing factor.
“The past few heads of service have been female. Nine of my 17 directors are female and this is just by seniority.
“The government is doing what it should do in terms of creating that level ground, at least at the federal level. People are accepted into civil service, regardless of their gender.
“People are promoted regardless of their gender. Some people might ask for quotas and affirmative action,” Adeyemi said.
She spoke on some of the challenges women face in workplaces as a result of childbearing.
“Society is more geared towards men. You want a woman to work on an engineering ship, she said.
