The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has released the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act 2023) in Igbo to promote accessibility and inclusivity.
The presentation of the 40-page Igbo version of the Act was made on Thursday in Enugu by Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner of the NDPC, represented by the Commission’s Director, Ms. Sanni Fatima.
Dr. Olatunji explained that translating the Act into indigenous languages was aimed at enhancing its accessibility, readability, and public awareness.
“The NDP Act, signed into law in 2023 by His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, establishes the framework for protecting and lawfully processing personal data in Nigeria,” he said. “To promote inclusivity, the Act has been translated into the three major Nigerian languages—Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo—so every citizen can understand their rights and obligations under the law.”
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ivan Anya, National Chairman of the Association of Licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisations, said the Act protects Nigerians against data theft, manipulation, and invasion.
He explained that the law enforces penalties for data breaches and ensures accountability from data officers, handlers, organizations, and systems, thereby safeguarding citizens from losses due to data breaches.
Dr. Anya urged states to domesticate the NDP Act to protect residents from scammers and digital fraud syndicates. He also encouraged youths to explore opportunities in data protection, highlighting the demand for certified and licensed Data Protection Officers.
“The Federal Government has authorized the Institute of Information Management to certify and license Data Protection Officers, while our association facilitates training for professionals in this field,” he said. “Nigerians must be mindful of who they share their personal information with and understand the purpose and limits of its use by individuals or organizations.”
The event was attended by tech innovation professionals, data management experts, bank staff, and NYSC members, among others.
