The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said that opening additional 6GHz and 60GHz spectrum bands will boost high-speed connectivity for homes, schools, and hospitals across the country.
The Head of the Spectrum Services Department at NCC, Atiku Lawal, made this statement at the conclusion of a two-day National Spectrum Roadmap Stakeholders Consultation Forum held on Tuesday in Abuja.
Lawal explained that the commission’s plan to open new spectrum bands is not only aimed at improving quality of service but also at extending connectivity to underserved areas.
“The commission is opening two spectrum bands, 6GHz and 60GHz, not just to enhance service quality but also to foster innovation. Connectivity today goes beyond calls—we use it for online banking, business, and other digital services.
“You will experience better network performance and improved quality of service. This is the commission’s objective: to ensure that all Nigerians enjoy reliable and high-quality telecommunication services,” he said.
Lawal added that Nigerians should expect improved services before the end of the year.
Earlier, Martha Suarez, Representative of the Dynamic Spectrum Alliance (DSA), who participated virtually, said the 6GHz spectrum would accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation.
“This spectrum will enable the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups. It also presents opportunities to support agriculture, the Internet of Things, smart homes, smart factories, and applications in augmented reality, virtual reality, and extended reality.
“The 6GHz band allows for larger channel bandwidths, supporting the latest technologies and innovations,” Suarez added.
