ASHENEWS reports that a team of Alumni of the Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna has donated a N14.7 million Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) to the institution.
This online platform further reports that the eqhipment can track satellite location and provide continuous and permanent real-time GNSS positioning information to the University.
Working as partners in Sacredion Nigeria Limited, Ikeja, Lagos, the team made the donation as part of their contribution to the institution in partnership with TERSUS GNSS Inc, Australia.
Presenting the equipment to the university management at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room in the Main Campus of the University in Gidan Kwano, the Team Lead and Principal Consultant of the Sacredion Nigeria Limited, Chika Okorocha said that the equipment was donated to facilitate the training of students, promote research and development in the university.
Okorocha, who graduated from the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics in 2010, noted that the CORS is designed to track satellite location and operate continuously for 24 hours, thus providing continuous and permanent real-time GNSS positioning information for a specific area.
He added that the equipment has a wide range of applications which include land surveying, engineering, construction, environmental mapping as well and environmental modelling among others.
“Surveyors, Builders, Civil Engineers, Geographers, and Environmentalists can use the receivers that can connect with CORS for road and railway constructions,” the Team Lead stated.
Receiving the donation, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Faruk Adamu Kuta who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Uno Essang Uno said that the equipment would be installed at the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, School of Environmental Technology.
He appreciated the donation by the Alumni stating that the University is blessed with graduates who strive towards building the positive image of the University assuring that the equipment will be judiciously utilized.
Other members of the donor team were Urama Ugochukwu who graduated from the Department of Physics in 2019, Mr. Chikezie Okorocha, who graduated from the Department of Electrical Electronics in 2015 and Mr. Chinonso Edeh.
