The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) has clarified that recent changes in pump prices by some operators were private business decisions and not instructions from the Federal Government.
In a statement released on Thursday and signed by its Brands and Corporate Communications Manager, Matilda Johnson, PiCNG described reports that the government had removed subsidies or increased the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as “misleading and completely false.”
Johnson explained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed PiCNG to promote the use of CNG as a cheaper, cleaner, and more sustainable alternative to petrol and diesel across Nigeria.
She noted that with the support of relevant government agencies, the CNG sector has already attracted close to one billion dollars in private investment, showing the growing confidence in its potential.
According to her, matters relating to fuel pricing are handled by regulatory agencies, and the Federal Government has not given any order to change the pump price of CNG.
She stressed that the recent price adjustments announced by some operators were strictly private-sector decisions and not linked to any directive from government.
Johnson added that the government remains committed to ensuring that CNG stays significantly cheaper and cleaner than petrol and diesel. She said the focus is on expanding CNG use nationwide and encouraging more private-sector participation to guarantee wider access and affordability.
