An Ilorin-based Information and Communication Technology (ICT) expert, Biola Johnson, has advised members of the public to beware of fake online links and protect their personal information from internet fraudsters.
Johnson, the Chief Executive Officer of Johnson Infotech, gave the advice in an interview with reporters on Saturday in Ilorin.
He said many internet users unknowingly expose their personal information online without verifying the authenticity of the links they receive.
According to him, scammers often exploit such opportunities to defraud unsuspecting individuals.
“It is not every link sent to you that is genuine. There are scammers everywhere waiting for the slightest opportunity to defraud people.
“People must stop clicking on every business link they receive and avoid entering sensitive details online where strangers can access them.
“Do not release your National Identification Number (NIN), Bank Verification Number (BVN), or other vital information to unknown online dealers.
“It is very dangerous,” he said.
Johnson also urged the public to always verify information before clicking on links to avoid falling victim to fraud.
He cautioned people against rushing into business transactions with strangers online, advising them to carry out proper verification before engaging in such dealings.
The ICT expert noted that many victims of online fraud are often driven by desperation and lack of patience.
Johnson, however, called on government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to intensify public sensitisation programmes on how to safeguard personal information online.
