The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Hon. Aniekan Umanah, has announced that Governor Pastor Umo Eno has signed a new electricity law and is planning to host a power summit to tackle the state’s long-standing electricity supply problems. He said the move will also help reduce tariffs, making power more affordable for residents.
The Commissioner praised the governor for constructing over 771 kilometers of roads and 32 bridges within just two years in office.
Speaking during a live programme on Comfort FM, Uyo, at the weekend, Umanah explained that the first Akwa Ibom State Electricity Summit will provide a clear roadmap for reliable and affordable electricity in the state. He said it will also strengthen state-level regulatory institutions.
According to him, the summit will create opportunities for new partnerships between government and the private sector to support sustainable investments. It will also bring together stakeholders from both Federal and State Governments, as well as investors and development partners.
“The Power Summit, scheduled for September 18–19, 2025, will not just be a talk-shop,” Umanah said. “We are bringing in top experts from the power sector. With the signing of the Electricity Bill, the governor is focused on ensuring electricity is available and affordable for all Akwa Ibom citizens.”
Umanah also emphasized that the government is committed to fulfilling the infrastructural goals of the ARISE Agenda. He noted that Akwa Ibom has already built more roads than any other state in Nigeria this year, citing recent survey data that ranked the state first in road construction nationwide.
He further highlighted Akwa Ibom’s tourism potential, saying the ARISE Resort, set to open in December, will be a world-class attraction. He added that with the Ibom Hotels and Conference Centre also underway, the state is positioning itself as a top holiday destination.
“This year’s Christmas Unplugged will be very unique,” Umanah hinted. “I won’t reveal the surprises yet, but it will be something special.”
