The Abia State Government has inaugurated the Science Teachers’ Championship (STC) competition to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education across the state.
Speaking at the launch in Umuahia on Thursday, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Goodluck Ubochi, highlighted the critical role of STEM in the education sector. Represented by the Director of Science Technology and Vocational Education, Mrs. Hope Nwosu, Ubochi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equipping and motivating science teachers to champion STEM education.
“This is a statewide competition for all schools—public and private. The current administration is prioritizing science education, and we have compiled a list of the required science teachers to fill public schools soon,” Ubochi said.
He urged teachers to remain dedicated to their duties, noting that the government rewards hard work and commitment.
The Chief Executive Officer of ASSPPAA-ISBORS Platforms Limited, Mr. Patrick Ochuba, explained that the STC competition aims to create a reward system for science teachers and students while shifting focus from theory to practicals.
“This platform is designed around the WAEC, NECO, and JAMB syllabus to ensure all experiments align with the curriculum. It is structured to make teaching more lucrative, interesting, and entertaining,” Ochuba said.
Secondary school principals, teachers, and students can register for the competition on www.scienceteacherschampionship.com, with participation completely free of charge. Monthly rewards include N50,000 for the best teacher in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, and N20,000 for the top-performing science students. Teachers who upload science experiments on the STC website will earn N1,000 per experiment, credited directly to their e-wallets or bank accounts.
Ochuba assured stakeholders that the impact of the competition would become evident by the end of February when the first set of winners will be announced.
The Abia State Government is partnering with ASSPPAA-ISBORS Platforms Limited to implement the initiative, which aims to connect science teachers digitally and students across public and private secondary schools in the state.
