President Bola Tinubu has directed the swift rollout of free healthcare access for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), describing the initiative as a crucial pillar of social protection and a reaffirmation of dignity for Nigeria’s ageing population.
In a decisive move to enhance retiree welfare, President Tinubu also ordered the prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee aimed at securing a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners under the CPS.
The directives followed a detailed briefing by the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, at the State House.
President Tinubu further tasked the PenCom DG with resolving the protracted issue surrounding the police pension scheme. He stressed that officers who dedicate their lives to protecting the country must be assured of a dignified and secure retirement.
Ms. Oloworaran, in her briefing, highlighted ongoing efforts to preserve the value of pension fund assets amid inflation and economic fluctuations. She also unveiled plans to introduce foreign currency pension contributions, enabling Nigerians in the diaspora to actively participate in the national pension system.
The President expressed strong support for the outlined reforms, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and social security for all Nigerians.
According to the PenCom DG, the commission is rolling out a suite of transformative initiatives aimed at deepening the reach of the pension scheme and improving the well-being of retirees across the country.
