A coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths has rejected the endorsement of Seyi Tinubu for the 2027 governorship election, asserting that the position should be reserved for true indigenes of the state.
In a statement signed by Abdul Kareem Whyte on behalf of the group, the coalition criticized the endorsement of Seyi by the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), describing it as “anti-democratic” and a deliberate attempt to marginalize Lagos indigenes.
The group condemned the endorsement announced in Owerri, Imo State, questioning the credibility of a non-indigenous body making decisions about Lagos governance.
“While Mr. Seyi Tinubu has his democratic rights as a Nigerian, this ill-fated endorsement undermines the right of Lagos indigenes to govern themselves,” the statement read.
They lamented the historical marginalization of Lagos indigenes, noting that since 1999, only one true indigenous leader has held the governorship position.
The coalition firmly stated that Lagos deserves a leader with deep ties to its indigenous communities, accusing successive governments of sidelining these groups, which has led to underdevelopment, especially in rural areas.
“Our hinterlands remain neglected, roads are in deplorable condition, Lagos is burdened by debts, and our traditional systems have been distorted. This marginalization must stop,” the group asserted.
The coalition also raised concerns about attempts by non-indigenes to gain endorsements from traditional rulers.
“We call on the Oba of Lagos to resist pressure from those seeking to manipulate their ancestry for political gains. Allowing such moves would be an insult to Lagos indigenes, and we will fight against it,” the statement warned.
The group criticized CONYL’s endorsement of Tinubu, urging the coalition to focus on advocating for youth empowerment and good governance rather than meddling in Lagos politics.
“There’s soon to be a vacancy in Osun State or perhaps Owerri, where Mr. Tinubu’s experience might be welcomed. However, in Lagos, there is no vacancy for non-indigenes in 2027,” the group declared.
The statement concluded with a rallying cry to Lagosians to remain vigilant and prioritize indigenous leadership for the state’s progress.
