Senate President Godswill Akpabio has returned to Nigeria from London, dismissing widespread rumours about his health.
Akpabio arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday, where he was received at the presidential wing by fellow senators, aides, and supporters.
Speaking to journalists on arrival, the Senate President described speculations that he had been hospitalised in London as false and mischievous. “I’m fit as a fiddle. I only stopped over in London for a short vacation,” he said.
Akpabio had earlier attended the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland, held from July 29 to 31, before proceeding to the United Kingdom. He explained that Nigeria played a prominent role at the global parliamentary gathering, pushing for stronger democratic governance and improved collaboration among branches of government.
The Senate President assured that the National Assembly would resume with “robust legislative engagements” when it reconvenes, stressing that the legislature remains committed to addressing the challenges facing the country.
Before his return, Senator Gbenga Daniel, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, had also refuted claims that Akpabio was critically ill, noting after a personal visit to London that the Senate President was in good health.
At 62, Akpabio has been Senate President since June 2023. He previously served as Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
