Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has launched a new political party—the America Party—in a dramatic move aimed at disrupting the U.S. two-party system.
The announcement, made on July 5 via his X (formerly Twitter) account, came just one day after he posted a poll asking followers if he should create a new party. The response was overwhelming: nearly 70% said yes.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party… and you shall have it,” Musk declared.
A reaction to “uniparty politics”
Musk said the tipping point for him was the recent passage of a massive $3 trillion federal spending bill—endorsed by both Republicans and Democrats. He slammed the move as reckless, accusing both parties of merging into a “uniparty” that no longer represents average Americans.
The America Party, according to Musk, will offer a fresh alternative—socially moderate, fiscally responsible, and aimed at giving voice to politically independent voters.
Focused political strategy
Rather than jumping straight into presidential politics, Musk plans a more targeted approach. He says the party will support candidates in 2–3 Senate races and 8–10 House races where a third-party presence could sway outcomes.
This strategy, he argues, will allow the America Party to build influence where it matters most—without the massive cost of a national campaign.
Allies and momentum
The idea has already drawn interest from political outsiders like Andrew Yang, entrepreneur Mark Cuban, and former White House aide Anthony Scaramucci. While Musk hasn’t filed any official party documents yet, insiders say he’s assembling a network of legal and political advisors.
With more than 220 million followers on X and near-limitless resources, Musk has the platform and the money to make noise—if not an immediate impact.
A new rift with Trump
The launch of the America Party also signals a break between Musk and former President Donald Trump. Musk has publicly criticized Trump-aligned Republicans who backed the controversial spending bill and vowed to support primary challengers against them.
Political analysts say this could split parts of the conservative vote heading into 2026 and beyond.
Big vision, bigger hurdles
Despite the buzz, building a third party in the U.S. is no easy feat. Ballot access laws, high legal fees, and a deeply entrenched two-party structure stand in the way. Many past attempts—like those by the Libertarian and Green parties—have struggled to win significant support.
Still, Musk’s entry into politics is likely to keep him at the center of national debate.
Elon Musk isn’t just talking about change—he’s putting his influence and fortune behind it. Whether the America Party becomes a lasting political force or a flash in the pan, it’s clear that Musk is ready to challenge the system head-on.
